Roughly a year after the victory of the democratic revolt known as Maidan against the kleptocratic regime of Viktor Yanukovich, Ukraine still remains a top priority on Western foreign policy radar. And it looks like it is going to stay there for some time. Even if recent attempts to end the bloodshed in the Eastern part of Ukraine do bring peace, it will be at best ephemeral, as the roots of the current crisis will not be easy to eliminate; they are hidden in the very fabric of the relations between Russia and the West after the end of the Cold War.
